Central Gas Furnace Issue

Fun Furnace Facts: What’s True and What’s a Misconception

Furnaces can last 15 to 20 years or more with proper maintenance. To extend the life of your furnace, it helps to keep the following furnace myths and misconceptions in mind.

Close Vents if You Want Less Heat

Myth: It would seem like common sense to do this. However, closing vents just makes your furnace work harder. If you notice that some of your rooms are hotter than others, it means your furnace needs to be inspected. Uneven heating could be caused by clogged vents or issues with your thermostat.

Keep Your Furnace as Long as It’s Still Working

Myth: A functioning furnace isn’t necessarily one that’s efficient. If your furnace has been around for 20 years or more, it’s time to consider upgrading to a new one. Today’s furnaces are more efficient than ones made a few decades ago. A new furnace installation requires more of an investment up-front, although it will save you money in the long run. Signs you need a new furnace include:

  • Inconsistent heating
  • Higher energy bills
  • Frequent repairs
  • Unreliable operation

Focus On Energy Efficiency When Purchasing a New Furnace

Myth: Today’s furnaces are more efficient. Home furnaces and HVAC systems that are moderately efficient have an 80% to 83% annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating. High-efficiency furnaces can deliver almost 99% AFUE. However, you won’t get the optimal efficiency if your home isn’t energy efficient as well. You can attain this goal by:

  • Looking for drafts around doors and windows
  • Cleaning vents
  • Having your ductwork checked for leaks

It’s Normal to Have Cold Feet in the Winter

Myth: If your feet are regularly cold indoors, it could mean your home lacks sufficient insulation. This means your furnace works harder than it has to keep your home warm. Heat naturally rises, but even so, a well-insulated home should be warm from ceiling to floor. If your windows or doors feel cold to the touch or drafty, consider replacing or insulating them.

It’s OK Not to Maintain Your Furnace Every Year

Myth: Even if your furnace is still working just fine by the time it gets to be a year or two old, it’s still important to keep it well-maintained. There could be small, underlying problems that aren’t apparent until a professional makes an inspection. Neglecting regular maintenance could also invalidate your warranty.

Your furnace needs regular attention to maintain optimal performance. Contact C&C Myers in Charleston, SC, for more information about our furnace services.
